Hub Highlights May: Social Innovation and Community Collaboration.

This May at the Innovation Hub has been full of new beginnings, collaboration, and impactful initiatives. We welcomed a fantastic new team, cheered on Enactus SLC at Nationals, and hosted a class exploring emerging technologies. Let's dive into this exciting edition of Hub Highlights!

Welcome New Team Members!

First up, a very warm welcome to our fantastic new team members! Cesar joins us as our Technology Coordinator. With his wealth of experience, he will be instrumental in developing our initiative, Realms and bringing it to new heights. On the project and event coordination front, Andrea and Isabel bring a breath of fresh air to our Open Podium events and Ideation Workshop series. Rounding out our all-star team is Kashish, our new Office Administrator. Kashish's expertise will be crucial in streamlining our office procedures, ensuring a smooth and efficient operation behind the scenes.

Collaboration in Action:

This May saw some incredible examples of collaboration at the Hub! First, on May 10th a student-led coding competition organized by Andrew Ryce (Computer Programming and Analysis) brought together over 30 high school students from across Ontario for a real-world coding challenge. We applaud Andrew's initiative to nurture future innovators and the tireless support of faculty advisors John Holmes and Michael Carter (Computer Systems Technician) for representing SLC and supporting the initiative.

Enactus Shinanigans

Next, during the week of the 13th, we cheered on the Enactus SLC team at the National competition in Toronto! Their passion for social change resonated with the judges, particularly the "Repair Together" project. This initiative, focused on e-waste refurbishment and community donation, perfectly embodying the Hub's commitment to innovation and social impact. We're incredibly proud of Jet, Rielly, Ernest, Karla, Nada, Raj, Ravi, and Dan, along with their dedicated faculty advisors.

Enactus SLC also hosted their first monthly open house on May 28th, showcasing the incredible impact they have on both the community and their members. It was an afternoon filled with inspiring stories, insightful discussions, and a chance to learn more about getting involved.

Psychology Students Exploring Emerging Technology:

To close out the Month on the 29th The Hub also had the pleasure of hosting Pam Shea's Bachelor of Psychology class. The class explored emerging technologies and how they can be used to enhance their studies. Students delved into Virtual Reality specifically the Bodyswaps app, using it to practice public speaking skills. They also explored Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its potential for data analysis and visualization. An important ethical discussion was had on; the use of AI and how these students can leverage this tool responsibly in their studies and eventually in their industry.

Let’s collaborate!

This May was a great way to kick off the summer semester, we at the Hub are feeling inspired and hope our SLC community is too. We are always here to help bring your vision to life.
